We will make you feel calm and comfortable while our experienced dentists examine your mouth for any significant changes. If we find anything, we will refer you to a specialist.
Some symptoms of mouth cancer include pain or difficulty when eating, chewing or speaking, and a numb feeling in the lips or mouth. Other symptoms include sores in the mouth that won’t heal, red or white patches in the mouth, and swelling in the mouth or lips. A significant change to your ability to bite down is also a symptom.
Many of these symptoms are also found in other dental and oral health matters, which is why it’s so important to have regular check-ups and screenings. It’s important to remember that those who smoke and drink heavily are at greater risk of mouth cancer.
We will inspect your mouth for red and white patches and sores that could indicate mouth cancer. This examination will be carried out with gloved hands while we also feel for any lumps, swelling or abnormalities.
Depending on the results of your exam, we may either recommend a follow-up appointment or a referral for a biopsy to check whether cancerous cells are present.
