What is a crown?

Put very simply, a crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the visible section of a tooth.

What does a crown do?

A crown helps protect and restore a damaged tooth and is a definitive solution for a tooth that is beyond repair with a direct filling. Once in place, a crown looks, feels, and functions like your original tooth, prior to its damage.

In some cases, a crown can be used aesthetically to help improve the appearance of discoloured or odd-shaped teeth. A crown is often used in cases where a filling needs to be replaced but there isn’t enough tooth left for another filling to be viable.

What is a crown made of?

Crowns are most often made from metal (either gold or a metal alloy) or porcelain. For the most natural-looking option, we recommend using porcelain crowns which can almost exactly mimic the appearance of your original tooth.
